7/6: Lift every voice and sing

Pastor's Message

WPUMC Members and Friends,

I hope you all had a good Fourth of July! A couple of Sundays ago, we sang Lift Every Voice and Sing, which was adapted from a poem by James Weldon Johnson - this is the third verse:

God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand.
True to our God,
True to our native land.

The poem was put to music by Johnson's brother, and first sung by 500 school children in celebration of President Lincoln's birthday on February 12, 1900 in Jacksonville, FL.

As this song and its powerful words have been resonating in my head, I continue to be aware of the work that we need to do to assure that all people are able to live lives of freedom and be counted as worthy by the world.

Please join me in a first step by reading the book White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo, and emailing me at pastor@washparkumc.org to sign up for one of our conversations about the book (late July and August dates TBA). Let's do all we can to promote inclusion and independence for all God's people.

If you were unable to join us yesterday for online worship, please follow THIS link to view it. To hear the scripture, read by David Trickett, see below.

As always- the WPUMC staff are here for you. Let us know if there's anything you need from us. Peace and love today! --Rev. Sandi
